About Us

Flathead Farmworks is an urban flower farm in downtown Kalispell, Montana. We believe in connecting our community and clients with the beauty of nature while caring for the land and highlighting each season's best attributes. We believe that curiosity and tenacity are the foundation of continual growth – for plants and for people.

Our floral designs feature 100 percent locally grown flowers and foliage, primarily from our farm. Every design is created with the client’s personality and event in mind. We love using texture, color, aroma and movement for a full sensory experience.

Meet the Flower Farmer

I’m April (she/her), a fourth generation cool climate gardener. I’ve been digging in the dirt and watching things grow since I was a child growing up in the woods of northeastern Washington. For the past decade I’ve had the privilege of living in this beautiful corner of Montana.

Being a farmer florist allows me to merge everything I enjoy: science, art, planning, creativity and being outside. I have a bachelor’s in English and a master’s in library science, and for 15 years I worked in publishing, marketing and public libraries. Now as a flower farmer, floral designer and entrepreneur, I get to combine all of my skills in marketing, organization, writing and planning with my passion for growing beautiful flowers.

When working with wedding clients, my professional background allows me to make the planning and design process clear, smooth and enjoyable. As a former librarian, I love the excitement of matching an inquiry with the perfect answer – in other words, being the bridge between locally grown flowers and each couple's personality and vision for their day.

Our History

I met my husband, Kurt, in 2013 and quickly discovered our mutual love of wilderness, good food and gardening.

In 2015 we founded Flathead Farmworks to provide fresh vegetables and herbs to local restaurants. Flowers have gradually become the main focus of the business.

As a landscape architect, Kurt has been instrumental in the design and functionality of the Flathead Farmworks growing spaces. Located in downtown Kalispell, the half-acre urban farm contains our home, annual and perennial gardens, shade trees and fruit trees, chicken yards and a greenhouse. It is a work in progress, with added improvements and new experiments every season.

Core Values: Curiosity. Tenacity. Quality. Whimsy.

  • We believe in curiosity, research, a sense of humor, and doing better once we know better. There is always more to learn.

  • We are tenacious and hard working. We get dirty.

  • We hold extremely high standards for quality, uniqueness and artistry.

  • We are playful, quirky and genuine.

Business Practices

  • We care about the land. Our job is to assist nature, learning each season's best attributes and sharing that beauty with others.

  • We value genuine relationships and an open-minded appreciation for every personality.

  • We try to make better choices, not necessarily the easy choices, always looking toward the future. Shortcuts are rarely worthwhile.

  • We look outside our local area and our industry for inspiration on business, pricing and strategy.

  • We seek to support and purchase from other businesses, suppliers and vendors that prioritize inclusion, ethical labor practices and the environment.

  • We respect and value diverse life experiences and heritages, and we believe that an equitable environment is one where all customers, employees and industry partners feel safe, valued and respected.

  • We believe in equitable treatment and opportunity for all people, all genders, all races.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

  • We use organic and regenerative growing methods instead of relying on pesticides and herbicides.

  • We compost, recycle, reuse and repurpose.

  • We never use floral foam, which is not biodegradable and also contains harsh chemicals and contributes to the problem of microplastics in our waterways.

  • We don't dye, paint, bleach or otherwise chemically manipulate our flowers and foliage.

  • We avoid single use plastics whenever possible.

  • We believe in sustainable pricing and fair wages.

Anti-Racism Statement

We at Flathead Farmworks reject all forms of racism. Racism in any form will not be tolerated here or in any events we take part in. We are committed to the mission of increasing cultural respect by cultivating greater understanding of the concepts of diversity, inclusion, equity, implicit bias, white privilege, white supremacy and systemic racism especially within the wedding and event industry.

Land Acknowledgement

Flathead Farmworks acknowledges that we live and work on the unceded traditional lands of the Salish, Pend d’Oreille and Kootenai. We commit to learning and pursuing policies and practices of cultural equity to benefit current and future generations. We cannot share the stories of Montana without acknowledging that this land was stewarded by the Salish, Pend d’Oreille and Kootenai people for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans, and that many Indigenous people continue to live on this land. We recognize that as non-Indigenous people we must continually confront our place on this land.
